AUG 29 — Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's opening statement on the Budget drew laughter from the house. He lamented on the fact that friends usually appear during the good times and disappear during the bad times.
He also made a conciliatory gesture to the opposition to work together to face the turbulent period ahead.
The budget proposals was full of giveaways which specifically
targeted to relieve the effects of inflation and the burden of the
rising cost of living of the poor and the lower middle class.
The most significant was higher welfare payouts for the poor in
peninsula and especially more for Sabah and Sarawak, relief on
utilities like telecommunication and electricity bills and lower taxes
on imported food items.
The voters in Kuala Lumpur should celebrate as the government
proposes to spend additional billions to upgrade public transport
notably the Light Rail Transit and KTM Komuter system.

WHEN flats meant for squatters are not completed, the solution would be to allow the squatters to remain where they are.
But in one particular case,
squatters from Skudai Kiri in Johor Baru may be delaying one of the
country's major development projects by staying put.
The area
is part of Iskandar Malaysia and under the project, the 688 squatter
families in Skudai Kiri are supposed to be shifted to low-cost housing
in Sungai Melana, Tampoi.
Unfortunately, not much has been done at the proposed relocation site as construction of the flats has yet to begin.
Member of Parliament for Pulai, Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, said the
squatters cannot be expected to move until the flats are ready.
"My condition (to the state government) is that they build the flats first and then relocate the squatters.

JULY 14 — World crude prices were little changed this morning,
settling at US$145 (RM478) for US light crude while London Brent
slipped four cents to US$144.45, the news headlines said tersely.
The
police had roadblocks across Kuala Lumpur today because some wanted to
protest the fuel price hikes. The roadblocks caused traffic to crawl,
wasting precious fuel and delaying most, including my trip to
Parliament.

JULY 11 ─ For an announcement with such significance there was very little drama.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi had made the most difficult decision of his political life, by announcing his retirement plan to ensure a smooth transfer of power to his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
His ultimate sacrifice was executed with honour and without the emotional scenes that accompanied Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's retirement in 2003.
